Chapter 1 of 8
What AI visibility means
The difference between ranking in search results, being mentioned by name, being cited as a source and being recommended as a provider.
AI visibility describes whether your business appears when someone asks an AI assistant for information, a comparison or a recommendation. It is related to traditional search results, but it is not the same thing.
There are four separate outcomes worth keeping apart. A traditional search result is a link on a results page. An AI-generated answer is written text that may not link to anyone. Being mentioned by name means the answer names your business. Being cited as a source means the answer links to your website. Being recommended as a provider is a stronger outcome again, where the assistant suggests you as a suitable option.
These outcomes often move together, and they can also move apart. A business can be cited as a source without ever being recommended, and it can be named without being cited. That is why measurement matters more than assumption.
Key takeaways
- Ranking and being cited are measured differently.
- Being named is not the same as being recommended.
- AI answers vary between engines and over time.
