What is a fractional AI officer?

Most UK fractional AI arrangements sit somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand pounds a month, scaling with days committed and the seniority behind them.

Compare it honestly against the alternative. A full-time senior AI hire in the UK is a six-figure commitment once employment costs are included, and in a business under 250 people there is usually not a full-time job's worth of decisions to make.

Also compare it against simply buying the projects. If two projects a year would cover it, the retainer needs to be earning its place through better decisions, not activity.

A named person, not a firm. Their operational background, not just their AI background. A fixed number of committed days, in writing. A defined decision remit, so everyone knows what they can say no to. A short notice period on both sides. And clear ownership of the accounts, tooling and documentation.

The operational background is the one that gets skipped and matters most. Someone who has run the process being automated will spot the reasons it will not work in week one rather than month five.
